Joan Walsh finally gets it

Joan:

The Obama team seems to think 2012 will take care of itself, as long as they burnish that shining Obama “brand,” which requires reaching out to Republicans and independents and ignoring the pesky left, with its old culture-war grudges and its subversive demand for greater economic fairness. I’ve heard some smart folks speculate that the White House may even welcome a Republican takeover, the better to “let Obama be Obama,” and continue to play out his fantasy of being a Democratic Ronald Reagan, creating a generation of what he used to call “Obamacans” and realigning politics for his lifetime.

If anyone in the White House still believes that, they are delusional. If Republicans win back the House, they will tie up the president in subpoenas and bogus investigations faster than you can say Darrell Issa. The president hasn’t created “Obamacans”; instead he’s created a phenomenon best described as “Obamacan’t.” And still he cozies up to Republicans like Alan Simpson, who’s determined to slash Social Security and its “310,000,000 tits”…

And the problem with Obama’s milquetoast approach to the economy isn’t just political: If Republicans get to reverse or obstruct the Democrats’ inadequate but promising steps forward on healthcare and financial reform, while slashing government spending and extending the disastrous Bush tax cuts, we may yet see an economic collapse to rival the Great Depression — the one that an earlier generation of brave and visionary Democrats vowed would never happen again.

Adam Serwer, guest blogging on The Plum Line:

Sam Stein points to a startling number in a recent Newsweek poll showing that 52 percent of Republicans think the statement “Barack Obama sympathizes with the goals of Islamic fundamentalists who want to impose Islamic law around the world,” is either “definitely” or “probably” true. It’s a mistake to impart too much meaning to a single poll result, but this is still a pretty strange result — and it may be a manifestation of what Julian Sanchez has termed “symbolic belief,” simply saying you believe something as a matter of hyperbolic political expression, not because you really believe it.

However, I think the poll reflects, in part, the success of sustained efforts by conservative writers to make this exact case. This the “respectable” version of the “Obama is a secret Muslim smear,” the argument that the president himself might not be Muslim, but that he sympathizes with “them.” Since the sorts of people making this argument believe that Muslims are objectionable as a group, that’s a problem.

The poll result is also another example of the remarkable ability of the conservative base to hold two entirely contradictory impressions of a person at the same time — on the one hand Obama is a social libertine who wants to teach sex ed to children, end discrimination against gays and lesbians in the armed forces and allow women unfettered access to abortion, and on the other he’s part of a global conspiracy to institute a repressive interpretation of Islamic law that would prohibit all of those things. [Emphasis added.]

And it’s another example of the remarkable ability of the conservative power structure to entice its base into believing any old damned stupid thing.

Where is the concerted, consistent effort to counter these lies? The Prez says it’s not up to him. He’s above all that. And nobody else thinks it’s important enough, either.

And this is exactly why progressives . . .

. . . should have supported Hillary over Obama. Where were their heads? Oh, that’s right, their head were up Obama’s rectum.

Paul Krugman (thanks to bostonboomer):

Andrew Ross Sorkin’s column today makes Wall Street honchos sound like spoiled kids; they went for Obama because he seemed like their kind of guy, then turned on him with a vengeance because they think he’s looking at them funny.

Based on what I know, that’s about right.

I talked to some financial-industry backers of Obama back during primary season; they really didn’t know or care much about policy issues, but were in love with Obama over his style — and also over the prospect of being in his inner circle, something they knew wouldn’t happen with Hillary. Now they’re mad because they don’t feel that they’re getting enough stroking.

And you have to bear in mind that this comes after Obama has made immense efforts to placate the financial industry.

Can Democrats find the route to populism?

What Created the Populist Explosion and How Democrats Can Avoid the Shrapnel in November

By Drew Westen

To say that the American people are angry is an understatement. The political brain of Americans today reflects a volatile mixture of fear and fury, and when you mix those together, you get an explosion. The only question at this point is how to mitigate the damage when the bomb detonates in November.

The bad news is that it’s too late for Democrats to do what would have been both good policy and good politics (and what the House actually did do), namely to pass a major jobs bill when it was clear that the private sector couldn’t keep Americans employed… From having spent much of the last four years testing messages on a range of issues, from immigration to taxes and deficits, I can say with some certainty that nothing John Boehner or Eric Cantor could say could come within 30 points of generating the enthusiasm — particularly among swing voters — of a message that began, “We don’t have a shortage of work ethic in this country, we have a shortage of work.” That message resonates across the political spectrum. And it isn’t even the strongest message we’ve tested in the last weeks or months that beats back the toughest deficit-cutting language the other side can muster.

But it’s too late for that. The administration opted for an alternative doctrine, which Larry Summers enunciated on This Week several months ago: that unemployment is going to remain high for the foreseeable future and eventually come down — as if there’s nothing we can do about it — and that they will push here and there for small symbolic measures whose symbolism tends to escape people who are out of work. It’s hard to be excited by symbolism when your children are hungry or the bank is repossessing your home — although you didn’t do anything to deserve it — while the people who did are once again making out like bandits.

Although the situation looks bleak for Democrats in November, it ain’t over ’til it’s over. Republicans are shooting themselves in the foot all over the country, running Tea Party candidates who are so far to the right you can’t see Middle America from their porch. And some endangered Democrats will likely see victory in November from theirs if they understand the public mood and speak to it.

What is that public mood? It can be characterized by a single phrase — populist anger — and it cuts across partisan lines. On the right, it is alloyed with racial anxiety and prejudice. On the left, it is alloyed with tremendous disappointment at what could have been if we had the kind of bold leadership for which times like these cry out. And among people in the vast political center, populist anger is alloyed with anxiety and uncertainty — about their jobs, their homes, and their children’s future…

[A] strong populist message trounces anything the other side can say. But Democrats need to play offense. They need to take up-or-down votes on bill after bill, including those they expect the other side to block, knowing that every one of those votes has the leverage of a campaign ad behind it. They need to change the narrative from what sounds to the average American like a whiny and impotent one — “the Republicans won’t let us do it” — to a narrative of strength in numbers shared with their constituents. And they need to make every election a choice between two well-articulated approaches to governance — and to offer their articulation of both sides’ positions and values.

That leads to a final point. What Democrats have needed to offer the American people is a clear narrative about what and who led our country to the mess in which we find ourselves today and a clear vision of what and who will lead us out. That narrative would have laid a roadmap for our elected officials and voters alike, rather than making each legislative issue a seemingly discrete turn onto a dirt road. That narrative might have included — and should include today — some key elements: that if the economy is tumbling, it’s the role of leadership and government to stop the free-fall; that if Wall Street is gambling with our financial security, our homes, and our jobs, true leaders do not sit back helplessly and wax eloquent about the free market, they take away the dice; that if the private sector can’t create jobs for people who want to work, then we’ll put Americans back to work rebuilding our roads, bridges, and schools; that if Big Oil is preventing us from competing with China’s wind and solar energy programs, then we’ll eliminate the tax breaks that lead to dysfunctional investments in 19th century fuels and have a public-private partnership with companies that will create the clean, safe fuels of the 21st century and the millions of good American jobs that will follow.

That’s what Democrats stand for. It’s time they said it.

Why pay utilities, if you don’t have to?

Actor Brad Pitt on Meet the Press, Sunday, talking about the houses he helped build in New Orleans after Katrina:

“I want to tell you, these homes–last, last month, these homes, every one of them but one was producing more energy than they were–than they were eating.  So families were getting bills that were $8, $12, just processing fees to tell them they didn’t owe anything for utilities.  That’s an amazing story.  And there’s no reason now to build any other way.  There’s just no reason.  So I see this place as a template for the future.”

Brad Pitt Stars on Meet the Press

By Brent Budowsky

(Hollywood Today) 8/30/10 — I propose a standing ovation for the noble and important work that Brad Pitt has done in New Orleans, after hurricane Katrina, to build affordable and environmentally innovative housing that has made life better for many people, and lifted the spirit of the community.

It is equally interesting and important that Pitt’s work in New Orleans was featured on Meet the Press, the premier Sunday national news show.

The Pitt segment on Meet the Press represented one of those rare moments when serious national news of great substance intersects with Hollywood celebrities doing substantial and highly valuable work.

An article in The Atlantic titled “Houses of the Future” described in some detail the environmental innovations of what residents of New Orleans call “the Brad Pitt houses”.

On Meet the Press Sunday, Brian Williams of NBC News discussed these homes with Pitt, especially the way the homes are built sufficiently above sea level to withstand even a Category 4 Hurricane, and are built to be affordable for those who would need them.

I have long been interested in the intersection of Hollywood and Washington, ranging from the days of Frank Sinatra (one of my clients was Sinatra’s agency) and President Kennedy, to the many entertainers who deserve years of standing ovations for their art and their good works on behalf of American troops.

Brad Pitt’s work in New Orleans stands at the highest levels of this great tradition…

Politically the Pitt project involves the best of citizen involvement and the private sector that should appeal to conservative and liberals.

I am partial to the more progressive point of view, and believe there should be even greater involvement from “Hollywood liberals” in a 2010 campaign that poses great threats to progressive values.  I will address this topic soon, in media that reaches both the political and entertainment worlds, especially with “conservative billionaires” donating major money, and Rupert Murdoch alone donating a million dollars to Republicans…

For now, lets join in giving a standing ovation to Brad Pitt for truly substantial, creative and successful efforts after Hurricane Katrina.

Fox News Finds ‘Ground, Zero Mosque’ Financier…Close to Home

Starting about a minute in, this clip from [the] Daily Show is must-see media criticism.

On the Fox News morning show Fox & Friends, it is revealed that the Kingdom Foundation is a dangerous Saudi organization that, according to guest Dan Senor, funds radical madrassas and has also funded Feisal Abdul Rauf, the imam at the heart of the “Ground Zero Mosque”  controversy.

Unmentioned by Fox, but revealed by Jon Stewart, is that the Kingdom Foundation is run by Al-Waleed bin Talal, who also happens to be…one of the NewsCorp’s largest shareholders (Fox’s parent company).

Blindness is a very sad thing

Riverdaughter:

Corzine: “She would have been able to handle this Congress”

So, the former governor of New Jersey attended a birthday party for the Big Dawg and in one sentence managed to sum up everything that is wrong with the Democratic party right now:

“…Susan and Alan Patricof watched the slenderized and beaming couple kick it up to “You’re Still the One” as former New Jersey Senator John Corzine looked on wistfully. “I just wish,” Corzine said shaking his head, “I mean I knew — she would have been able to handle this Congress… but it was just Obama’s time.”

No, Jon, it was OUR time.  That is, the American people’s time.  It was time for us to stop being terrified of scary Muslims.  It was our time to stop the slide of the middle class towards destitution.  It was our time to invest in infrastructure and our future.  We needed a leader who was ready and able to help us do that.  It wasn’t feminists’ time or African Americans’ time.  The prize of the presidency of the United States was not a personal accomplishment for Barack Obama.  He wasn’t ready for a commitment as big as this one.  And this is where you made your fatal mistake…

Thanks for nothing.

The GOP game plan

Politico:

John Boehner is clearly laying his marker for what Republicans think will propel them into the House majority in November.

Not a Contract with America, but a Contract on Obama. A continuous battering of the president’s advisers, policies and legacy. A recital of every Democratic misstep, misstatement and miscue of the past 20 months. An attack strategy that is thus far short on Republican vision and long on bashing Democrats.

Just as I predicted in 2008. Do I get any traction for being right, for seeing what was going to happen? Nope, I’m still a racist.

Save the Democratic House!

Save the Democratic House!

By Brent Budowsky

A message to the progressive base: save the Democratic House!

Is Harry Reid un-American?  This gem came from an opinion writer for the Wall Street Journal, owned by Rupert Murdoch, who recently wrote a $1 million check to Republicans.  Time Magazine slanders America.  This contribution came from Commentary.  These and other jewels, widely quoted in conservative media, offer insight into what happens in America if Republicans win control of the House of Representatives, with the power to call hearings and issue subpoenas.

My number one goal for the duration of this ill-begotten campaign is to urge liberals and progressives and populists to rouse to vote to save the Democratic House.

Despite my own widely noted misgivings about Democrats in Washington, no choice has been more clear or more right than this one.

But being negative, even when true, is not enough, so here is the positive:

Progressives who have every right to be disillusioned with Democrats in Washington should remember that it was the Democratic House of Representatives that passed a far better healthcare bill including a public option, passed far more consumer protections against abuses from banks, passed far stronger legislation to create more American jobs, passed legislation to promote new energy and combat global warming.

Those Democrats who are the most unhappy with the Democratic President and Democratic Senate should, indeed must, remember that the Democratic House has shown the most courage, and integrity, and principle, and character of any political institution in Washington by standards of the Democratic base.

It is an irony of history that if progressives fail to vote, the great punishment, and a great political injustice from the point of view of progressives, will be to defeat a Democratic House that has delivered again and again with courage and conviction compared to other Democrats in Washington, and elect a Republican House that would be empowered with the gavel and the subpoena, and dependent on those who practice the politics of slander and derision and question the patriotism of those with whom they disagree.
