BigCarrot’s Crowd-Sourcing Approach to “Venture Capital” Funding (by Kristen Nicole at Mashable)
BigCarrot is … currently testing in private beta, for an ongoing project that looks to provide a way to offer funding for ideas, and spur innovation from individuals and groups. This looks to be very similar in concept and execution to ThePoint. BigCarrot does so by letting the community put money into the pool in order to fund particular ideas. It works in a slightly different manner than most funded projects: it starts with the idea, and leaves it up to the community to present someone to make the idea a reality.
Why don’t we have something like this for progressive media?
Saber-Rattling Isn’t Working (Public Opinion by Ruy Teixeira, Center for American Progress)
Polls show a public against military action against Iran even before the new intelligence estimates, despite administration efforts to garner support.
Did Bush approve CIA leak to embarrass Pelosi? (by John Aravosis ·at AMERICAblog)
Sure looks that way. [Sunday’s] Washington Post reports that Pelosi was briefed about the CIA’s waterboarding in 2002 and raised no objections… [R]emember, it took place in the first year after September 11 – Bush and the Republicans would have leaked [an objection] to the public (like they just did) and destroyed her career and marked her publicly as a traitor. No member of Congress, no American, could have spoken up about anything in the months after September 11 and survived… I hope this teaches Pelosi and Reid and all the Democrats that no matter what you do, this administration will mark you as a traitor and try to … destroy you. You might as well fight back and try to win, because if you don’t, you’ll sit back and lose.
On the other hand, see Digby’s take, below.
Accomplices (by digby)
You simply cannot persuade me that there was no way that people in their positions couldn’t have buttonholed enough members of their party in congress to say, “trust me on this. These people have done some things which I can’t tell you in detail, but which you need to understand are unAmerican. We must take a stand.” Harman and Rockefeller would have been listened to. So would Pelosi and Graham (who says he doesn’t remember the briefing and has spoken out vociferously about torture since then.)
It’s time for the Democrats to come clean about everything they knew—about torture, eavesdropping, and every other nefarious activity of this administration. Get it out in the open, and then we can move forward without the administration being able to blackmail Democratic leaders every time they try to accomplish something.
Admin officials refuse to talk about torture tapes.
On ABC’s This Week, host George Stephanopoulos told his audience, “You should know that I invited the CIA director, the director of national intelligence, and President Bush’s national security adviser to join us today. They all declined.”
CIA Tape Scandal: News Outlets Struggle With Word ‘Torture’
As the protests surrounding revelations that the CIA had destroyed tapes that showed brutal interrogations by its agents, most new outlets refused to brand what the tapes likely showed as “torture.” But two key editorials embraced the word.
Kristol: Iran Halting Nuclear Weapons Program Is ‘Another Feather In The Cap For Iraq Invasion’
Today in the Fox News Sunday roundtable, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol claimed that the reason Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in mid-2003 was because of the U.S. invasion of Iraq… NPR’s Juan Williams responded by calling Kristol the “iron glove,” asking, “So you want us to start invading everybody everywhere? That’ll stop all nuclear proliferation?” Kristol replied that if it works, it’s “a pretty good thing.”
I think it was Juan Cole yesterday on the Sam Seder Show who said that if this were so, Iran would surely have said something back then, as did Libya. But remember that Iran did make an overture to the U.S. in 2003, and it was rejected. Click through to watch the Kristol video.
Schooling NeoCons on Intelligence Analysis (by Larry Johnson at No Quarter)
Leave it to Newt Gingrich to believe that providing people with truth is the equivalent of a coup. And John Bolton–a black pot if ever there was one–is angry that intelligence is being used to fix a policy [!]… Folks like Gingrich and Bolton only accept intelligence if it corresponds to their preconceived prejudices. Truth is largely irrelevant in their worldview. Just as long as the story line adheres to neocon orthodoxy, they are happy campers. Where is the “politicization” or “policymaking” in the current NIE?
Wearing the Pants
The mind, so easily distracted by things mauve and lemon yellow, strays from more pressing concerns to ponder the sartorial: How many pantsuits does Hillary Clinton have in her closet? And does she ever wear them in the same combination more than once?
How can the Post justify this kind of stupidity? Even if it IS on page A24? Thanks to Digby.
Meet The Press: Mistresses Should Get Secret Service Protection Too! (by Nicole Belle at Crooks and Liars)
Continuing his surprisingly confrontational interview with Rudy Giuliani, Tim Russert asked about the stories about Judith Nathan’s police protection as his girlfriend. Rudy’s response was less than satisfactory, putting the onus on the decision to get protection strictly on the security, not him, and based on threats to his family and loved ones’ lives. The only problem is, as Tim points out, the timing doesn’t quite work out, as Judy had protection long before his affair with her was known… The money quote for me is when Russert asks Giuliani if by using his logic, presidential mistresses were entitled to Secret Service protection as well and Giuliani says they should.

NPR: Dana Perino Don’t Know Much About History (by Nicole Belle at Crooks and Liars)
Dana Perino appeared on NPR’s “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” and admitted that she RECENTLY had to ask her (British) husband if the “Cuban Missile Crisis” and the “Bay of Pigs” were the same thing. Keep that in mind the next time she says, “let’s take a historical perspective on this…”

O’Reilly: Progressive blog readers = ‘devil worshippers.’
On Fox News yesterday, Bill O’Reilly let loose on “far-left websites” like DailyKos, stating, “If you read these far-left websites, you’re a devil worshipper. You are.” O’Reilly’s ombudsman responded, “As a journalist, you know better than that.” O’Reilly shot back: “Satan is running the DailyKos. Yes, he is!”… At the end of the segment, O’Reilly said, “That was a little satire there…don’t get too upset about it.” But he then added, “I still think they are satanists.”

Mythbuster: All Brains Are the Same Color (by Richard E. Nisbett, professor of psychology at the University of Michigan)
If European genes conferred an advantage, we would expect that the smartest blacks would have substantial European heritage… [But] blood group assays show no association between degree of European heritage and I.Q. Similarly, the blood groups most closely associated with high intellectual performance among blacks are no more European in origin than other blood groups… [And] we know that interventions at every age from infancy to college can reduce racial gaps in both I.Q. and academic achievement, sometimes by substantial amounts in surprisingly little time. This mutability is further evidence that the I.Q. difference has environmental, not genetic, causes. And it should encourage us, as a society, to see that all children receive ample opportunity to develop their minds.
The Post Goes Post-Modern on NAFTA (by Dean Baker)
Michael Dobbs, the reporter who runs the [Washington] Post’s “Fact Checker” section … did a write-up of this issue yesterday in which he seemed to come to the conclusion that there are different ways to measure growth, and you get to pick the one you like best. While I tried to explain that this is not true, I apparently could not convince the Post’s fact checker… According to the Washington Post methodology, Argentina’s economy has grown by 73.4 percent from 2002 to 2007, an average of 11.6 percent annually… The Post used an inappropriate methodology to try to convince readers that NAFTA has been a glowing success in Mexico. It hasn’t been a glowing success, and it is time that the Post came clean with its readers on this point.
Climate sceptics vindicated…not (Feedback at New Scientist)
On 8 November many who would deny that human activity has anything to do with global warming were agog at news of a paper entitled “Carbon dioxide production by benthic bacteria: the death of manmade global warming theory?” by Daniel A. Klein of the Department of Climatology, University of Arizona and colleagues (Journal of Geoclimatic Studies, vol 23, p 273). It was just what they wanted to hear… [But] neither the authors nor their institutions nor the journal exist.
New Tactic Alert: Grand Jury in Kansas to Probe Abortion Clinic Practices
The Kansas Supreme Court has cleared the way for a grand jury with subpoena powers to conduct an unprecedented investigation into abortion-clinic practices after a petition drive by anti-abortion activists. Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline … Kline has filed 107 different charges against Planned Parenthood. Peter Brownlie, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, stated, “No health care provider should be threatened with felony convictions simply because elected officials oppose legal abortion.”
Media Matters for America headlines
Matthews and guests lauded Romney’s “Faith in America” speech, ignored attack on “secularism”
Drudge headline falsely asserted, “Edwards Slams Oprah”
Matthews and others on NBC networks have repeatedly linked Clinton to fictional Nurse Ratched
O’Reilly blamed killing of two alleged burglars on “Houston’s sanctuary city policies”
AP’s Iraqi Photog Finally Gets Day in Court — Sort Of
An Iraqi investigating magistrate on Sunday convened the first criminal hearing in the case of Associated Press photographer Bilal Hussein, who has been held by the U.S. military without charges for nearly 20 months.
Two columnists say fame-seeking lunatics shouldn’t be ID’d
Jon Friedman: “I believe that media executives can help to minimize the possibilities of future incidents if they ceased to provide such high-profile publicity to these deranged gunmen.” || Michael Mayo: “Let’s find out as much as we can about these troubled killers and tell their stories. Let’s talk to their families and friend, examine how legal or medical systems broke down, failed them and us all. But let’s not name them.”
SacBee says sending ad work to India benefits customers
Sacramento Bee business development veep Ed Canale says sending advertising production work to India is “about improving our service to our customers.” At least one reader doesn’t buy that. That person writes in the Bee’s comments area: “Come on, at least be honest about why you are outsourcing the jobs. Your goal in doing it is NOT customer service but cost cutting.”
I wonder how he’ll feel when the business development department moves to India.
Interview: Tom Curley, CEO, Associated Press; Portals, Local Content—‘The Mother of all Battles’ (by Joseph Weisenthal at paidContent.org)
[D]eals with Google and Yahoo to furnish national and international content are secondary to what Curley calls “the mother of all battles”—local content. Here is where the AP believes it can offer newspapers a significant leg up, as the major portals attempt to invade that turf.
Reuters and Intl Herald Tribune sign content deal
News and financial information provider Reuters and the International Herald Tribune said on Monday they would launch a co-branded daily online and print business report for the newspaper from next month.
LinkedIn courts developers, lands BusinessWeek deal
NEW YORK (Reuters) – LinkedIn, an Internet social network for professionals, will open up its service on Monday to outside software developers, starting with BusinessWeek magazine, to transform itself from an online contacts and referral database into an indispensable daily tool for business users.
Scherer quits Salon to become a Time political correspondent
Michael Scherer will report and produce videos for Time.com, as well as write for the magazine, says managing editor Rick Stengel. “Michael represents the new Time correspondent: adept on-line, on-air and in print,” he writes in a memo to staff.
Films Shot on Camera Phones Get Showcase
YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) – Masked and demure, she speaks from the tiny screen of a cell phone like a thumb-size fairy forever trapped inside. “Welcome home,” she says softly to the viewer. “Speak to me about anything.” The minuscule video is among the works on display at a film festival that opened Friday in this Japanese port town, featuring 48 movies – all shot on camera-equipped cell phones.
Universal Music Group, imeem ink deal
LOS ANGELES – Social networking Web site operator imeem Inc. has signed a licensing deal with Universal Music Group to offer free streaming of music and videos by the record company’s artists in exchange for a share of online advertising revenues, the companies said Sunday.
Screenwriters Dig In for an Extended Brawl
With the leadership of the Writers’ Guild looking to elevate writers’ position in the industry, the Guild’s strike now promises to drag on well into the new year.

ABC News taps Matthew Dowd as contributor and blogger
ABC News acting Washington bureau chief Sara Just says the network will benefit from Matthew Dowd’s “unique background and perspective” as a former Bush campaign strategist. She tells Howard Kurtz: “You’ll probably have some Democrats who won’t trust him and some Republicans who won’t trust him,” We’ll just have to let his work speak for itself.”
ABC News Bombs on Facebook, As Predicted By You (by Adam Ostrow at Mashable)
Despite the huge buzz in the blogosphere and a write-up in the New York Times, the app has only 8,700 active users, 3% of the total that signed up in the surge to see what the media giant and Facebook were up to. While Facebook could still be considered in an “experimental phase” when it comes to new types of content and ways to make money, the lackluster start to the ABC News deal suggests that political coverage is not going to be one of the company’s winners going forward.
Live Microblogging: What I’m Learning (by Amy Gahran at Poynter Online)
I’m currently using Twitter to provide live coverage of many of the sessions at a seminar… I’m doing this largely as an experiment to explore how journalists (professional or amateur) can use microblogging tools like Twitter… I found that when doing so many “tweets” (Twitter posts), I gave up on also trying to take notes conventionally. Twitter became my session notes — live and in public… Frankly, I like this approach.
Not like the olden days of reporters running out of the meeting to find a telephone and phoning the story in.
NBC reverses course, plans to run Freedom’s Watch ad.
After rejecting an ad by the group Freedom’s Watch which NBC claimed was too political, the network reversed course… In a statement issued Saturday evening, NBC said: “We have reviewed and changed our ad standards guidelines and made the decision that our policy will apply to content only and not to a referenced Web site. Based on these amended standards the Freedom’s Watch ad will begin to run as early as Sunday.”
NBC has no right to reject an ad because it’s “too political”. It can and should reject ads that tell provable lies, however. I don’t know that there are any lies in this one.
O’Reilly: Fox News Turned Down Pro-Constitution Ad Because It Was ‘Anti-American’
The Center for Constitutional Rights recently produced an ad called “Rescue the Constitution” that criticizes the Bush administration for “destroying the Constitution” through the use of tactics like renditions and torture. Fox News refused to air the ad, claiming that it needed “documentation” that the Constitution “is indeed being destroyed.” In the ad, actor Danny Glover states, “Trials. Renditions. Torture. The Bush administration is destroying the Constitution. They can be stopped. Rescue the Constitution.”

Company Brings Offline Data to Web Ads
NEW YORK (AP) – Information about your online and offline activities, formerly kept separate for marketing purposes, is starting to blend, perhaps without you even realizing it.
The ’60s as the Good Old Days
A new trend in advertising presents many of the contentious aspects of the ’60s — the protests, the hippies, the challenge to authority — in a positive, even romanticized light.
I nearly died the first time I heard Janis Joplin’s voice in a Mercedes Benz commercial. “Oh, Lord, Won’t You Buy Me” was a PUT-DOWN of the kind of people who buy Mercedes.
