Spain to get ‘African’ climate, report says
Madrid - Spanish experts have painted an alarming picture of the impact of global warming in the country, predicting droughts, flooding, new diseases and economic problems, press reports said Wednesday.

Drought Exacerbates Carbon Dioxide Problem
In North America alone, human activity—from driving cars to generating power in factories—releases about two billion tons (1.85 billion metric tons) of carbon in the form of carbon dioxide every year. Natural carbon sinks such as forests, grasslands, crops and soil absorb about one-third of those emissions, scientists estimate. But droughts seem to hamper the ability of these sinks to suck up the greenhouse gas.

Sweet fuel supply
A new type of fuel cell powered with glucose derived from biomass is described in the latest issue of the Inderscience Publication International Journal of Global Energy Issues. The experimental device works by using sunlight to convert the glucose into hydrogen to power the cell, which produces several hundred millivolts.

Antarctic Geological Drilling Program has exceeded all expectations
One week ago (Nov. 21), the drilling team passed the 1,000-meter mark in rock core pulled from beneath the sea floor in McMurdo Sound, and with a remarkable recovery rate of more than 98 percent. The end of drilling is scheduled for this weekend, and only a few tens of meters of core remain to be recovered for an expected final total of more than 1,100 meters (3,600 feet).
