PUPPET MASTER

According to news reports chronicling the American military’s recent success in pacifying Iraq, al Qaida fighters have disappeared throughout much of the war-torn Anbar province. It is not that more terrorists are being killed, but they have suddenly become scarce. Congressmen returning from Iraq attribute this development to the Surge, the more aggressive approach implemented by General David Petraeus.

The optimists may be right, but this would mark the first time during the Iraq War that they have been. Up until now the warmongers in the political/media complex have been consistently delusional or deceptive, and there exists an ominous alternative explanation for the miltary’s recent “success”. With General Petraeus’ long-awaited status report to Congress due imminently, it appears that Osama bin Laden is once again manipulating America into disaster. 

Osama has been gaming the United States every step of the way during the “War On Terror”. First, he lured the eager George W. Bush into the quicksand of Iraq, thereby neutralizing the American military around the world. Just before the 2004 election the al Qaida leader released a videotape endorsing John Kerry, a Machiavellian act that helped bin Laden’s Republican patsy to retain power. Now, just as Petraeus is about to deliver his congressional testimony Osama has created a mirage of American success by having jihadists adopt a low profile. And right on schedule he has provided another chilling videotape with which Bush can terrify the American people into staying the course, a course that insures certain defeat for the United States.

Bush is the best thing that ever happened to international terrorism, and bin Laden knows it. According to British Intelligence, al Qaida membership has increased exponentially during the Bush years, and support for the group throughout the Islamic world has also skyrocketed. With belligerent yet hapless Republicans in charge, Osama has the perfect foils needed to wage successful jihad.

Since bin Laden wants to let the good times roll, al Qaida continues to provide aid and comfort to its ostensible foes. Osama is currently attempting to drag Bush across the congressional finish line. Along with al Qaida’s exquisitely timely “disappearance” in Anbar and the useful videotape threatening apocalyptic doom, bin Laden has scaled back on the terrorism his minions were perpetrating in Europe and Africa and Asia. Consequently, when Petraeus delivers his report to Congress Iraq will be the exclusive focus of the jihadist/Western conflict, which dovetails with the Bush narrative that the country is the epicenter of worldwide terrorism.

Once Petraeus has spoken and continued funding for the war has been secured, al Qaida fighters will miraculously reappear in Anbar province. The brief success of the American military will soon become a glorious memory. Terror attacks across the globe will greatly intensify. Having been conned into conquering Iraq, the United States will have been conned into staying.

If America ever left Iraq, bin Laden would suffer a grievous setback. Given a choice between American occupation and al Qaida, most Iraqis empathize with their fellow Muslims. However, when the choice becomes being governed either by al Qaida or by themselves, the Iraqi people much prefer the latter. Only as long as the United States remains in Iraq does bin Laden possess the upper hand, which is why the puppet master is so intent on insuring that America does stay.

And America will stay, because the puppets are also determined to maintain the status quo. Courtesy of Osama bin Laden, Congress will soon be given evidence of illusory progress in Iraq. Like Pavlov’s dogs, the legislators will respond reflexively rather than analytically. The only player functioning analytically in this drama is a cave dweller who consistently outmaneuvers the mightiest nation in the world.
