Now we’ve lost Bob Geiger and Max Speak.  When are we going to wake up and join forces to create more paid slots for progressive commentary?

In case you missed it
A website run by the neocon thinktank the Center for Security Policy (members include Frank Gaffney, Richard Perle and Doug Feith) has published (then removed) a piece calling for Bush to use his military powers to become “the first permanent president of America” and “ruler of the world”. Along the way he suggests that the population of Iraq should have been wiped out.

El Paso Reporter Explains How He Got ‘FISA’ Scoop from Spy Chief
The reactions to Chris Roberts’ interview with Mike McConnell were swift and strong, from around the globe. “I don’t like being in the news,” Roberts told E&P today. “I don’t think that’s really the issue. The issue is what he talked about and what he said.”

Politifact Chops Stump Speeches into Lincoln Logs
This week Congressional Quarterly and the St. Petersburg Times launched Politifact, a refreshing approach to campaign coverage that pulls the rhetoric apart into components that can be examined, analyzed, and compared.

Why Democrats should never, ever say something that even comes close to showing approval of one of the Bush administration’s many misguided efforts: “Union Leader editorial falsely claimed Clinton said ‘troop surge in Iraq is working’”, “Krauthammer falsely claimed that Clinton ‘concedes that the surge “is working”’”.

LA Times‘ McGough guessed “President Gore” might have allowed warrantless wiretapping, but didn’t note Gore’s public criticisms
In a column, Los Angeles Times senior editorial writer Michael McGough asserted that … Gore “might well have followed suit after 9/11 with his own versions of the Patriot Act and the Terrorist Surveillance Program.” However, McGough did not mention Gore’s strong criticism of the Bush administration’s warrantless domestic surveillance program or that Gore has called for the repeal of the Patriot Act.

O’Reilly asserted “most journalists give money to Democrats” — but study on subject refutes him
On The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly stated: “[A]ll the money from the elites. We know that journalists — most journalists give money to Democrats.” However, the study O’Reilly was apparently referring to showed that of the small fraction of journalists who donated money at all to campaigns, more gave to Democrats than Republicans — not that “most journalists give money to Democrats.”

Bin Laden wanted US to invade Iraq, author says
As coalition troops continue to die on Iraqi soil and the US Government’s military spending on the war bleeds into billions of dollars, a new book says that not only could this have been avoided, but it was all predictable, as long as you had read the Al Qaeda manual.

O’Hanlon strikes back (by Steve Benen)
Brookings’ Michael O’Hanlon’s support for the war in Iraq came under quite a bit of scrutiny a month ago with the publication of his now-infamous NYT op-ed, and [Saturday] he tries to defend himself with a follow-up in the Washington Post. There’s not much to it, I’m afraid. O’Hanlon noted that he and Ken Pollack did leave the Green Zone, despite several assertions to the contrary. He added that his perspective on the war is not based just on “dog-and-pony shows,” but rather “observations,” “years of study,” and solid military sources.

Years of study don’t help at all when they’re used to cherry pick data to “prove” something you want to believe.

Tim Robbins tells Stephen Hayes to apologize to America for linking al-Qaeda and Iraq
ON the premiere of Real Time with Bill Maher, Tim Robbins told Cheney’s new BFF, Stephen Hayes to apologize for writing a book that tried to link al-Qaeda and Saddam so that it would appear he was in on the 9/11 attacks. And as C&L and many other blogs have been arguing is why are these people still considered “experts?”

Stop Making Sense (by David Brooks, criticizing Drew Westen’s Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation)
It’s not necessary to dumb things down to appeal to emotions. It’s not necessary to understand some secret language that will key certain neuro-emotional firings. The best way to win votes — and this will be a shocker — is to offer people an accurate view of the world and a set of policies that seem likely to produce good results. This is how you make voters happy.

Does David Brooks really believe Republicans won so many elections over the last 30 years by giving an accurate view of the world, when their policies are so bad for most Americans?  If so, why is he still employed by a major newspaper?

Word Watch: Sanctuary City
In the parlance of Republican-primary politics, “sanctuary” – as in sanctuary city – has become a bad word. In our occasional series we call Word Watch, ABC News political correspondent Jake Tapper and linguist Geoffrey Nunberg explain how a term rooted in religion was turned into an epithet.

Andy Rooney Regrets a Racist Comment in a Recent Column
Andy Rooney has made a career of being a grumpy old man, but his latest rant has drawn fire for crossing the line from crotchety to racist.
With some support, progressives could have a crotchety old lady.  I can guarantee that she wouldn’t be making any racist comments.

2 Out of 3 Anchors Join Colbert in Wrist Stunt
The Comedy Central host has turned his ordinary wrist injury into a media crusade, perhaps revealing contrasts among television’s three evening news anchors along the way.

MSNBC Thought Fake Al Sharpton was Real
Everyone’s a faker these days: in addition to Fake Steve Jobs, the blog parodying the Apple boss, there’s a whole network of blog fakers at NewsGroper. Unfortunately, MSNBC didn’t get the memo, and actually quoted the Fake Al Sharpton, believing [a] post to be the real deal… MSNBC, having missed the title of the NewsGroper site (”Fake parody blogs, Political humor, Celebrity Satire, Funny Commentary”) was later forced to retract the quote.
It’s hard to do satire nowadays.

Democratic Mob Censures Bush In Effigy
Although some members of the crowd initially incited a metaphorical impeachment of the president, a majority felt that would be far too harsh a symbolic action to take. After agreeing on the censure, the decorous riffraff whipped themselves into a relative frenzy and clamored single file to the National Mall with the meticulously crafted Bush effigy… Democratic leaders were quick to distance themselves from the subdued riot out of fear that condoning even a meta-symbolic political rebuke would alienate some of their more mild-mannered constituents… Top Republicans loudly denounced the censure.
See what I mean?  Satire is now so close to reality as to be indistinguishable from it. (Thanks to Thoreau at Unqualified Offerings.)

Suggested 2008 slogan for Democrats: Vote for us because we’re nice.  We only offend our base.

Roger Stone Sings Again
Perhaps the most poignant aspect of Roger Stone’s latest humiliation is that the Washington Post has yet to report on it… [O]ne can’t help wondering whether the Post has simply decided that the decline and fall of a once-powerful Republican political consultant … is well-enough along that it really isn’t news that Stone apparently left the 83-year-old father of Elliot Spitzer, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, a bizarre and hate-filled voice message.

Paul Krugman: A Socialist Plot
[T]here’s no difference in principle between saying that every American child is entitled to an education and saying that every American child is entitled to adequate health care. It’s just a matter of historical accident that we think of access to free K-12 education as a basic right, but consider having the government pay children’s medical bills “welfare,“ with all the negative connotations that go with that term.

‘To Catch a Predator’ Is Falling Prey to Advertisers’ Sensibilities
The high ratings for the program have come at a high price for NBC, as some advertisers say they are wary of being associated with the show’s content.
