Discussing the ongoing controversy surrounding the firings of eight U.S. attorneys and the role played by U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzalez, a March 26 Washington Post editorial stated: “Mr. Gonzalez finds himself in this mess because he and others in his shop appear to have tried to cover up something that, as far as we yet know, didn’t need covering. U.S. attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president — with the advice and consent of the Senate. The president was entitled to replace any he chose, as long as he wasn’t intending to short-circuit ongoing investigations.” The Post, however, ignored evidence that the prosecutors may have been fired for other improper reasons.

Drudge flagged Obama hit piece on Politico — which presented admittedly “trivial” inconsistencies — apparently one hour before it was posted
In an article appearing in The Politico‘s March 27 print edition, Politico chief political correspondent Mike Allen wrote that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has “shown a tendency toward seemingly minor contradictions and rhetorical slips,” characterized Obama’s alleged inconsistencies as “trivial,” and wrote that “the senator’s rhetorical miscues have been more curiosities than obvious political blunders.” Nonetheless, Allen stretched these alleged “trivial” inconsistencies into a 1,200-word article headlined, “Rookie Mistakes Plague Obama,” which appeared on the front page of the print edition. The Drudge Report flagged the article by posting its headline verbatim approximately one hour before The Politico posted the article on its website on the evening of March 26, according to Google News.

Citing none, NY Times’ Healy claimed “[s]ome uniformed officers” said Clintons are “more associated with a ’60s culture than the military”
In a March 27 New York Times article on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (D-NY) relationship with the military, reporter Patrick Healy wrote: “Some uniformed officers, too, said that the Clintons were more associated with a ’60s culture than a military one, and that only time would tell if Mrs. Clinton’s appreciation of the military would go beyond niceties and expressions of concern.” However, Healy did not cite any “uniformed officers” who expressed this view — either by name or anonymously — and, in fact, every military figure quoted or paraphrased in the article made positive comments about Sen. Clinton.

Partisan Research Dressed Up As News
It’s sloppy for reporters to use vague references to partisan opposition research in their stories without providing facts to either prop it up, or shoot it down.

American political media have turned into insiders talking to insiders, oppo researchers debating oppo researchers, partisan talking points debating partisan talking points, all masquerading as news, opinion or original content… Imagine a story or column that read like this: “New questions were raised by the opposition research staff of Candidate A about Candidate B.”  Or: “In an oppo research handout from the Republican National Committee, it was proven that Senator X made contradictory statements. Contacted by this paper, the talking-points writer for the Democratic Committee replied …”

Navy, Meet Fact Checkers; Fact Checkers, Meet Timely Queries
It looks like the U.S. Navy isn’t too happy with a recent New York Times Magazine story, and there’s been a bit of back and forth between the Navy and the Times over some fact-checking issues. On March 18, the magazine published a piece by Sara Corbett that profiled a group of female veterans of Iraq who, due to their combat experience, are having trouble adjusting to life back in the States. Problem is, one of the women featured in the story — who claims to have survived an Iraqi IED attack — never actually set foot in Iraq.

Washingtonpost.com executive editor Jim Brady says he doesn’t have the resources to screen the roughly 2,000 daily comments before they’re posted. Post reporter Darryl Fears believes the comments should be junked if offensive postings can’t be filtered out in advance. “If you’re an African American and you read about someone being called a porch monkey, that overrides any positive thing that you would read in the comments,” he tells Howard Kurtz. “You’re starting to see some of the language you see on neo-Nazi sites, and that’s not good for the Washington Post or for the subjects in those stories.”
A few children are bad, so the whole class can’t go outside to recess.  On most blogs and discussion sites, the commenters themselves report the bad guys.  The Post either has still learned nothing about how the internet works, or there’s something else they’re trying to prevent.  Such as instant fact checking, which has caught them in several misstatements of fact.

The 15 British sailors and marines seized by the Iranian navy yesterday appear to have been well inside Iraqi waters, but they had the ill fortune to stray into the path of the region’s aspiring superpower as it flexes new-found muscles.

Wherever Britain and its American allies turn these days in the Middle East, they are bumping into the new realities of Iran‘s spreading influence…

The House voted Friday for the first time to clamp a cutoff deadline on the Iraq war, agreeing by a thin margin to pull combat troops out by next year and pushing the new Democratic-led Congress ever closer to a showdown with President Bush.

The 218-212 vote, mostly along party lines, was a hard-fought victory for Democrats, who faced divisions within their own ranks on the rancorous issue. Passage marked their most brazen challenge yet to Bush on a war that has killed more than 3,200 troops and lost favor with the American public.

He dismissed their action as “political theater” and said he would veto the bill if it reached his desk…

MoveOn moves in with Pelosi

The netroots group’s support proved crucial to passage of the Democrats’ Iraq spending plan. But antiwar activists say MoveOn has been co-opted by its access to power.

March 23, 2007 | When Eli Pariser, the executive director of MoveOn.org, looks at the Iraq spending bill that Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders managed to pass in the House today, what he sees is a way to end the war. The bill, which won passage on a nearly strict party-line vote, commits $124 billion to fund operations in Iraq, but it calls for removal of American combat troops by the summer of 2008. The plan is not perfect, Pariser concedes. It does not require complete withdrawal. Still, this week, MoveOn signed on to Pelosi’s supplemental funding bill, citing a poll of its members showing overwhelming support of the idea.

MoveOn’s longtime allies in the antiwar movement, however, look at the bill — and MoveOn’s support for it — and see something very different. Groups who call for immediate withdrawal argue that MoveOn’s position is a betrayal of their cause, and that Pelosi’s bill merely continues the war while allowing Democrats to say they’ve done something to oppose it…

[In my opinion, it’s the anti-war activists who are betraying their cause.  They’re insisting on what can’t possibly happen, and if they got their way, they’d be DELAYING the end to the war.  I disagree with MoveOn on some issues, but not this one.—Caro]

Partying In The Congress And The Streets

I do not think that MoveOn or any of the other anti-war liberals who voted for the appropriations bill were sell-outs, clubby, “daddy party” or anything else. There is a difference of opinion among some in the grassroots as to whether the strategy was correct, but I do not believe that anyone’s motives were impure and I’m not sure it’s constructive to turn this into a battle over insiders vs outsiders.

Legislative sausage making is always somewhat unnerving to watch, but this one actually went quite well by historic standards…

I am not one to discount the idealism and energy of the party in the street. People need to feel that social connection to their politics and sometimes that’s what it takes to affect big change. I have always believed that the Code-Pink, Cindy Sheehan, ANSWER folks are an important part of the equation. Indeed, as the study points out, most of them are either members in good standing of the Democratic coalition or are willing to throw in their lot with them, just as the Christian Coalition does on the right. They deserve respect.

But so do the legislators and the “insiders” of various stripes who are laboring toward the same goal. Everyone has their job to do and in the case of this very difficult vote, I feel that the party in government, the party in the electorate, the party in organization and the party in the streets performed admirably. I don’t know when this war will end, but I do know that Democrats of all the “parties”, working together (as difficult as that may be) are the only ones who will do it.
